Early Childhood Curriculum

In OCA Early Childhood classrooms, students will be taught a strong academic foundation through a Biblical Worldview using the Bob Jones Curriculum. OCA will be using the following content curriculum materials for Kindergarten-3rd Grade.

Kindergarten Curriculum

OCA Kindergarten students will be taught using The Bob Jones Press Little Learners Program. This curriculum focuses on:

  • To teach students foundational phonics to prepare for reading with understanding.
  • To guide students in applying foundational Bible, math, science, and social studies skills.
  • To give opportunities to communicate through listening, speaking, and composing.
  • To guide students in relating biblically to their fellow students, authorities, and other people in their communities.
  • To provide opportunities for hands-on learning, discovery learning, and intentional play.
  • To equip students in applying the knowledge of God to how they think, learn, and play.

Early Childhood Reading Curriculum

For Early Childhood Reading classes, students will be taught using The Bob Jones Press Early Childhood Reading Program. This curriculum focuses on:

  • Foster a joy of reading.
  • Differentiate instruction with reading groups to meet the instructional needs of individual students.
  • Integrate a phonogram approach to phonics teaching and word-work instruction.
  • Teach vocabulary in context.
  • Encourage fluency by first reading silently for comprehension and then orally for communication.
  • Enhance comprehension through literary skills and strategies.
  • Develop discernment by evaluating literature from a biblical worldview.

Early Childhood English Curriculum

For Early Childhood English classes, students will be taught using The Bob Jones Press Early Childhood English Program. This curriculum focuses on:

  • To foster an appreciation of language as a gift from God.
  • To develop a foundational knowledge of English grammar and mechanics.
  • To develop study and reference skills.
  • To teach the writing process for narrative, informative, opinion, and expository writing.
  • To encourage clear and effective writing through mentor text analysis and regular practice of writing in real-world contexts.
  • To develop digital literacy.
  • To guide the development of collaboration, listening, speaking, and viewing skills.
  • To provide space for reflection on communication that serves others.

Bob Jones Early Childhood English Curriculum

Early Childhood Handwriting Curriculum

For Early Childhood Handwriting classes, students will be taught using The Bob Jones Press Early Childhood Handwriting Program. This curriculum focuses on:

  • Pre-Cursive Fonts (Grades K-2nd Grade)
    • The formation of letters through patterns.
    • Learn to write continuous-stroke letters.
    • The foundation of both our precursive and cursive systems.
    • Developing a rhythm and flow that eases the transition to cursive writing.
  • Cursive Fonts (2nd-6th Grade)
    • Continue to learn and reinforce natural, legible, and attractive handwriting. 
    • Perfecting their handwriting through supported practice
    • Practicing from memory, and creative writing. 
    • Introducing artistic writing with calligraphy.

Early Childhood Spelling Curriculum

For Early Childhood Spelling classes, students will be taught using The Bob Jones Press Early Childhood Spelling Program. This curriculum focuses on:

  • Guide students in developing spelling skills using phonics patterns, word studies, syllable patterns, high-frequency words, derivational suffixes and prefixes, and Greek and Latin word parts.
  • Promote the spelling-meaning connection through word study and word sorting activities.
  • Develop spelling consciousness through proofreading and writing activities.
  • Strengthen students’ word knowledge, reference skills, and writing vocabulary by teaching dictionary skills.
  • Meet the needs of individual students by using activities that differentiate instruction.

  • To teach basic Bible doctrines.
